Presidential Initiative - Clean Cities

"We have identified urban sanitation as a niche for job creation and restoring the sense of national pride. My initiative in the urban sector will involve engaging the private sector in the sanitation of cities."
In his five-year plan, President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi has made Sanitation one of the three priority initiatives. The Presidential Initiative Clean Cities'aims to create 50,000 jobs per million tons of waste and Kinshasa has been identified as the pilot city for this initiative.

Current Situation

Kinshasa generates over 5 million tons of municipal solid waste annually and half as much liquid waste, of which 95% ends up in gutters and rivers or burned in the open air. Waste emits 15 times more GHG than the mining, oil, and hydrocarbon sectors combined, representing 23% of DRC's emissions and exceeding those of 117 countries, including industrial powers such as Spain, Algeria, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Qatar, Belgium, Singapore, etc.

Assainir Kinshasa is not an isolated action. It is part of the 2024-2028 Action Program of the Provincial Government "Kin Ezo Bonga". This program aligns with the 6 presidential commitments and the three priority initiatives of the Head of State, among which the sanitation of our cities is explicitly included. Kinshasa, capital of the Republic, must be the showcase of this transformation.

Like you, we believe it is time to shift from a reactive approach to a transformative one. Kinshasa faces an immense challenge. Yet, this same challenge holds immense potential. That is why this initiative aims to make sanitation a true driver of green growth, social cohesion, and sustainable job creation. This project is not a miracle solution, but the first step in a process of deep and lasting transformation. It cannot succeed without collective mobilization and synergy of action among all stakeholders.
